Power Electronics is now critical to the operation of many of the things we rely on for daily life – energy generation, transportation, consumer electronics, industrial processes, medical products. One of the most important power electronic products is the variable frequency motor drive, used across those applications. This talk will provide a practical overview of the key components and systems required to make and run a variable frequency drive, taking the particular example of a drive for industrial processes. It will conclude with a look at some future technologies and developments in field.
Dr Tom Logan completed his PhD at Cambridge University in 2012 investigating the design and control of Brushless Doubly-Fed Machine, a type of generator for wind turbine applications. Following that he worked in industry developing motor drives and control systems for surgical training tools. He then returned to academia as Research Associate, also at Cambridge, working on power electronic applications, particularly automotive power systems Jaguar Land-Rover and products to operate on power distribution networks for a number of companies. Since 2015 he has been a consultant engineer with his company XEV Limited, which specializes in the design of power electronic products, particularly renewable energy systems and battery energy storage for power network support applications.
